Hi all,
I'm doing some numerical exercises with sediments and passive tracers. First I ran simulations with sediments only and had no problems. When I added the tracers in a source discharge point (passive tracer, neither salinity nor temperature), error messages appeared and the model did not run (diag message: “the model needs “n” columns and you are providing “n+1” columns). When I manually removed one column directly from the “source-sink.tim” file, the model has shown the same message and re-generated that “such extra column”. I noticed that by removing the “bedload” fraction from the model setup, the problem has gone. So I think it's a bug: bedload and tracers. Has anyone experienced a similar issue? I have not run simulation with bedload and temperature/salinity altogether. So, I can not say if the issue would persist in a simulation (bedload + temperature/salinity) or if it is related to the source-sink feature.

Best regards,
Hemerson

(DelftFM 2021.04 Version: 1.2.110.68456M)

I am developing a DFM domain for a small coastal lagoon, and encountering issues with salinity and temperature. Notably, I get salinity values which are greater than the initial condition or any boundary conditions. It seems to be a substantial mass, not limited to very shallow cells at the wetting/drying front. My initial condition is 0ppt, with a 34 ppt ocean boundary, and I see salinity values of 40 or more. In a 12 hour run, I summed the mass of salt exceeding 34ppt (i.e. sum( FlowElem_bac*waterdepth*max(sa1-34,0)) over the full domain). In some cases this showed as much as 1500 kg of "extra" salt (for reference, the volume of the domain is about 4e5 m3). Temperature also has output values that are sometimes greater than the initial condition or boundary conditions (with no additional heat fluxes).

Things I have tried to eliminate or constrain the source of this:
1. make initial condition and boundary conditions for salt and temperature constant and equal. In this case no new maxima are generated.
2. Compare running in 2D (Kmx=0) and 3D, one layer (Kmx=1): Different results but qualitatively the same behavior. Ultimately we want to run this in 3D, but currently just making sure it runs okay in 2D.
3. No change with increasing Epshu, changing limtypsa, CFLmax, changing TransportTimestepping
4. The domain is in UTM, and high resolution (dx ~ 3-10m). Tried translating the domain to be centered around 0 in case floating point truncation was a problem, but no change.
5. Mostly testing with 2021.03, but also tested with 1.6.1 with no change in behavior. All runs on Linux, using MPI (though it doesn't appear that the cells with excess salt are in the vicinity of inter-processor ghost cells).

The one setting that seems to have a big effect is BedLevType. The worst behavior seems to be with BedLevType=4. Type 3 is slightly better, and type 6 is the best (excess salt mass down to a max of 60kg).

Are there other settings in the MDU we should consider (aside from using Salimax and Tempmax)?

Thanks!
Rusty

I am working on a project for which I have to simulate three years of
hydrodynamical and morphological development in an open river flow.
Since some geometrical data/barriers (implemented via a *.bar-file)
change every couple of weeks i am working with multiple simulations
using the restart-file of the previous simulation. However, I checked
the morphology development and it seems to me that the restart file
does not contain any bathymetry information of the previous simulation.

With Quickplot I can export the 'bed level in water level points' at
the end of the simulation and use the exported file as the bathymetry
file for the next simulation. But since the bathymetry for the
computation is defined negative in the upper direction I need to
change the orientation of the bathymetry data. I can either do that
using Quickin (operations -> combine depth and uniform value ->
multiply depth and uniform value -> -1) OR I can directly export a
negative Quickin file. However, when I directly export a negative
Quickin file (-Quickin) the default value of -999 is also changed to
+999. Thus, using the exported file as the bathymetry file for the
next computation doesn't work because when I try to run the simulation
+999 is not regarded as a default value but as bathymetry data, which
is false and obvioulsy does not work with the simulation.

This doesn't happen when I manually change the orientation of the
file. But it would be resonably faster only having to export the file
  and using it right away.

Is there any way around the manually changing method? Any way I
can directly use the exported *.dep-file for the next simulation?

Kmx               = 5
Layertype         = 2
StretchType

seem like it's using the given layers (e.g. It doesn't show the
velocity in a certain layer when looking at the results). I am
thinking it could not be working because when starting the model in
the Deltashell it says it is first exporting the *.mdu file - which
would not contain any layers since I can't add than in the Deltashell.
However, opening the *.mdu file after running the model still shows
the layers defined like above. So it doesn't overwrite the .mdu file
after all. How is this possible? Any ideas what might be wrong?
