I've never used numerical models for oceanic islands before and I'm having problems with Deft3D-FLOW validation. The model domain includes a wide range of depths and a narrow, steep island shelf. I think these can be the complicating factors, increasing model instability. Actually, I've been testing a rectangular 2D grid with the island in the center (350 m resolution), using water level boundaries and only astronomic level and uniform wind as boundary conditions. I already tried to set a maximum depth to 1000 m after the bathymetry interpolation and smoothed the depths located after shelf, but even so the results do not change too much. I tested several combinations of coefficients (roughness, viscosity and wind drag), but I couldn't define one that works well for the velocity components.

Has anyone had problems applying Delft3D-FLOW for oceanic islands? Does anyone have any suggestions about the grid, bathymetry and boundary definitions? I really need help.

Thank you so much.
